Deep in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru, in Asháninka territory, flows Shanay-timpishka, "the Boiling River," surrounded by the mystery of the powerful forest spirits—the very spirits that, according to the Asháninka, created the river itself. The river boils at its upper inception, and anything that falls into it gets unalived and claimed by the waters. Yet, at the same time, the river remains remarkably safe to drink. It is a mythical place where the cacophonous symphony of jungle creatures is ever-present, peaking in the early morning. It was in these early morning hours, enveloped by the heavy steam rising from the rocks, that I captured this image.
